Sun, Sea and Street Food: How to Spend a Weekend in San DiegoBy Alicia Grimshaw
San Diego is often defined by its coastline. And with good reason. Stretching for 70 miles along the Pacific, it shapes not just the landscape but the tempo of the city itself.
Set along the Pacific, San Diego’s famously even climate makes it less a seasonal destination than a year-round habit. Life here happens outside: along coastal paths, in open-air markets, and on sun-drenched terraces where time stretches easily into the evening. Here’s what to do, and where to eat and drink in California’s coastal city.
A City Defined by Experience

A celebration of the 56th Annual Chicano Park Day takes place in Barrio Logan on April 25th. Set beneath the city’s iconic bridge murals, the free event brings together live music, traditional dance, lowrider car culture, art workshops and community gatherings. The wider cultural calendar continues this theme of storytelling and expression, including the San Diego Latino Film Festival, which showcases Latino voices and perspectives across film, performance and visual arts.

Food and drink also take centre stage, from large-scale tasting events such as the North Park Festival of Beers (April 4th) and Uncorked: San Diego Wine Festival (April 11th), to immersive experiences like Gator By The Bay (May 7th – 10th) – a Louisiana-inspired festival bringing zydeco music, Cajun cooking and live performance culture to the waterfront.
Across neighbourhoods and coastal towns, open-air festivals, art walks and street fairs continue throughout spring, reinforcing San Diego’s reputation as a city experienced outdoors – through sound, flavour, movement and community.
Culture, Food and Creative Energy

San Diego’s creative identity runs through its neighbourhoods from coastal enclaves to urban districts. Balboa Park remains the city’s cultural heart, home to museums, gardens and performance spaces, while Liberty Station continues to evolve as a hub for arts and theatre, including the newly opened Joan & Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Centre
San Diego’s dining scene continues to flourish with new openings ranging from chef-driven fine dining to buzzy casual concepts. New arrivals include Fleurette, the latest project from celebrated chef Travis Swikard of Michelin-recognised Callie, and Lucien, an intimate tasting-menu experience in La Jolla led by Michelin-seasoned chef Elijah Arizmendi.

San Diego’s craft beer culture remains a defining part of its identity, with more than 150 breweries across the region and neighbourhood “beer trails” reflecting the city’s relaxed, social energy. Particularly in the neighbourhood of North Park, where 30th Street has gained fame as San Diego’s Beer Central. Along this avenue of eclectic shops, galleries and more, you’ll find some of the city’s best craft breweries, tasting rooms and beer-friendly restaurants. They play a big part in San Diego’s rep as the Craft Beer Capital of America.
A City That Keeps Evolving

San Diego’s energy is constantly refreshed by new cultural, culinary and experiential openings that sit naturally alongside its established icons. One of the most significant additions is Denny Sanford Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (March 2026), an expansive new habitat that brings an immersive African savanna environment and a strong focus on conservation storytelling.

Family travellers are also drawn to LEGO Galaxy at LEGOLAND California, a new space-themed land featuring the park’s first new rollercoaster in over two decades, alongside interactive rides and themed dining. The city also welcomes the West Coast’s only Navy SEAL Museum,, offering immersive exhibits and VR experiences exploring the history and missions of the elite naval unit.
A Coastal State of Mind

What defines San Diego is how seamlessly city life blends with the outdoors. From surf breaks and coastal trails to harbourfront dining and sunset viewpoints, everything is shaped by its relationship with the Pacific.
It’s this combination of relaxed energy, cultural depth and constant evolution that continues to define San Diego as America’s Coolest City.
