Spa Here: The Club at Cottonmill Spa, Sopwell House, St AlbansBy Gemma Perlin

There are spas that are pleasant and then there are spas that are extraordinary and show you rather than tell you that you can stop gripping so tightly. The Club at Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House, the latter the hotel which has been a stalwart of St Albans for 40 years, belongs firmly in the extraordinary spa category. Just an hour outside London, it’s the sort of place where your shoulders drop before you’ve even found your locker, and not even the drive home can hijack your peace.
The Club is warm, cocooning and quietly luxurious, with every detail designed to encourage you to linger a little longer.
The Club at Cottonmill Spa
Access to The Club at Cottonmill feels like stepping into a private wellness retreat. Wristband on, phone away, the outside world becomes surprisingly easy to forget, with the lush grounds of the hotel to peek at as you move around the spa. Cottonmill invites you to gently drift between experiences: herbal steam rooms, heat experiences, hydrotherapy pools, infrared beds, outdoor vitality pools and beautifully designed relaxation spaces.
It’s one of those rare spas where you genuinely lose track of time. We spent hours moving slowly from sauna to steam room, dipping between indoor and outdoor pools, herbal tea in hand, never quite feeling the need to settle anywhere because the next experience was always calling. We visited during the heatwave and loved nestling on the huge canopy beds in the shade, escaping the stickiness of London.
The panoramic sauna is the MVP. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame rolling greenery, turning what could simply be another sauna into something far more meditative. Instead of staring at tiled walls, you’re watching trees sway while the heat does its work.
What impressed me most wasn’t just the number of facilities, but how thoughtfully they’re designed. Nothing feels like it’s there simply to tick a luxury spa checklist. The staff are incredibly attentive too, moving around and checking everything’s running smoothly.
By the time we emerged, skin glowing and minds noticeably quieter, it felt as though someone had gently untangled every knot in my shoulders… despite not having a single treatment.

What we ate: The Pantry
One of the loveliest surprises is The Pantry, available exclusively to The Club at Cottonmill guests throughout the day.
It was very lovely presented grazing rather than heavy buffet fare: a three-course meal, starting with fresh seasonal salads and homemade soups, followed by a plated main, my partner went for the burger, I went for the seabass. We finished with a gluten-free pineapple cake and a fresh fruit salad.
There’s something wonderfully indulgent about padding into lunch at The Pantry in a fluffy robe, before wandering back out to an afternoon of doing absolutely nothing. In a world obsessed with productivity, I found doing this incredible for my soul.
