Big news for breakfast fans (and those that love bold flavours before midday), Sri Lankan restaurant Rambutan in Borough Market is opening its doors for a week-long breakfast pop-up, from Tuesday 25th to Monday 31st August. Get ready for a Bank Holiday weekend devoted to hoppers.

What’s On the Menu

Inspired by the early morning meals that founder Cynthia Shanmugalingam grew up with, the menu features all sorts of deliciousness. We’re talking about egg curry, a spicy fish red curry, and an aromatic Sri Lankan coconut and lemongrass dal, with a choice of plain and egg hoppers, freshly made butter roti (order a couple of these), and coconut and seeni sambols. There’s also Rambutan’s take on one of the great Sri Lankan breakfast inventions: a breakfast toastie filled with Neal’s Yard cheese and seeni sambol – a punchy, fiery onion jam cooked down with tamarind, cinnamon and spices until dark, sticky and sweet. Milk rice, known as kiribath, is also on the menu, with a spicy chilli lunu miris.

What to Drink

The drinks list leans into the same spirit. Alongside the expected chai (cardamom and cinnamon), there’s fresh watermelon juice and a tamarind cooler for those easing in gently. Anyone wanting something with more of a kick can order an acharu-spiced Bloody Mary, a mango Mimosa, or mutta kopi – a Sri Lankan coffee made with egg and a slug of arrack.
