Last month we witnessed the 100th anniversary of a significant milestone in the quest for gender equality: the vote for women. Yet as we celebrated the suffragettes who fought tirelessly for equal rights and changing history, many of the narratives that perpetuate gender inequality still persist.

HeforShe Arts Week: The Lowdown

UN Women NC UK are behind HeforShe Arts Week (March 8th-15th), a global festival for gender equality launching on Thursday (8th March), International Women’s Day in London. Throughout the week, artists and their audiences will challenge the old stories, create a new narrative, change mind-sets and raise funds to change the reality for millions of women and girls.

Over the course of the week, there’s plenty on offer including comedy, panel discussions, theatre and loads more. Here’s our top picks:

Thursday 8th March: Susan Sarandon, Executive Producer opens the festival with an exclusive preview screening of Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

Friday 9th March: ‘What Actually Helps’ – a discussion on gender equality Chaired by Laura Haynes, Chair of UN Women NC UK and with panelists including Comedian, Actor and Writer, Robert Webb, Chi Onwurah Labour MP for Newcastle Central, David Brockway from The Great Men Initiative, Sophie Walker – Leader of The Women’s Equality Party and Hollaback! 

Saturday 10th March: A Night of Small Things – London’s finest variety night.

Monday 12th March: Funny Women Awards Final hosted by Jan Ravens in search for the next female comedy icon.

Tuesday 13th March: LIVEwire poetry curated for UN Women by Salena Godden. This diverse and colourful line-up includes phenomenal poetry and lively spoken word from Joelle Taylor, Inua Ellams, Dzifa Benson, Matt Abbott, Michelle Fisher, Selina Nwulu, Connor Byrne and Salena Godden.

Plus performances of poetry, comedy debate and discussion including original arts installations by Alice Instone and Kristjana S Williams, UK premiere and private screening of The Rape of Recy Taylor with Q & A, including the stars of the film, Comedy at the 99 Club and tons more.
