Sometimes we all just need to escape, even if escaping means grabbing a cab to a hotel just down the road from where you live. That’s exactly what I did when I was invited one particularly cold and wet week to try out Vintry and Mercer and its new Christmas menu from an igloo on the roof. Despite having lived within a few miles of the hotel for decades, I’d never actually heard of it. Just a stone’s throw away from the magnificent St. Paul’s Cathedral, Vintry and Mercer is a boutique hotel that combines modern luxury with historical charm, offering a unique blend of comfort and convenience right in the heart of the city.

Its central location makes it just as good for tourists as it is for locals; guests can immerse themselves in this vibrant area while enjoying the tranquillity that the hotel provides. It being a Friday night, we caught a quick drink in The Ned before dashing around the corner to get comfortable in our studio room.

Vintry and Mercer: The Rooms

The Deluxe Studios – like the one we stayed in – boast all the features you might expect but with added dramatic views of the city through floor-to-ceiling windows lining the walls. These expansive windows frame London’s iconic landmarks, creating a picture-perfect backdrop to your stay. The in-room amenities cater to every aspect and include a king-sized bed, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making machines, a Nespresso machine, a Marshall speaker and a selection of complimentary soft drinks.

The studio felt a really good size with a lovely bathroom, complete with a bath and top-quality products. If you are just looking to get away from your own room and melt into an oversized bed then you won’t be disappointed. One thing to be aware of, this being the City, you are surrounded by offices and, office workers! We closed our blinds pretty pronto but it made for some great people watching too.

Vintry and Mercer: Eat and Drink

We were also here to check out Vintry and Mercer’s rooftop restaurant, Mercer Roof Terrace, which offers an enchanting dining experience with a Christmas twist. The restaurant boasts a panoramic view that sweeps across London’s skyline, from the grand dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral to the glistening tip of The Shard. During winter, a particular highlight is the selection of private igloos perched on the roof that allow guests to enjoy an intimate meal while soaking in the stunning views. The igloos are elegantly decorated and offer a cosy atmosphere, making them an ideal spot for romantic dinners or gatherings with friends.

This being November, we couldn’t wait to try the first Christmas menu of the year. We started with a seafood cocktail which was fresh and generous; towering hunks of fish were accompanied by the classic Marie rose sauce and a delicious seeded cracker. For mains, there was no better choice than the roast Norfolk buttered turkey breast, accompanied by all the classic trimmings. The turkey itself was a big thick slice that was tender and perfectly cooked. The gravy was super well balanced and all the sides were as good as you’d make at home.

The dessert selection was equally impressive, featuring a Christmas pudding cheesecake with clementine gel and sorbet, a delightful Chocolate and chestnut cake paired with cranberry ice cream, and a moreish Somerset Brie with toasted brioche and apricot jam.

What truly makes Vintry and Mercer exceptional is its dedicated and friendly staff. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted with warm smiles and impeccable service. The staff go above and beyond to ensure your stay is nothing short of perfect, offering local recommendations, attending to your needs, and ensuring every aspect of your visit is seamless. This was certainly the case at breakfast which we, super indulgently, chose to have in our room. Avocado on toast with salmon and poached eggs was served a la pillow and tasted all the better for us not having to move a muscle.

Vintry and Mercer offer the ultimate urban retreat for a Christmas staycation in London. With its central location, luxurious rooms boasting captivating city views, and an unforgettable Christmas dining experience at Mercer Roof Terrace, this boutique hotel provides an oasis of comfort and elegance in the heart of the city. The exceptional breakfast options and welcoming staff ensure that you feel a million miles from home, even when you’re only just down the road.
