The Lowdown: For two very different perspectives of the city, start at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, just south of Ocean Beach. San Diego’s dining scene continues to go from strength to strength, with exciting new openings joining an already acclaimed culinary line-up. This autumn sees the launch of Ikaria in La Jolla from the team behind local favourites Marisi, Puesto and James Beard-nominated Roma Norte. Inspired by the Greek island of Ikaria, one of the world’s original Blue Zones (areas where people live longer and healthier lives), the restaurant will showcase vibrant Mediterranean flavours with Middle Eastern influences, alongside wine tastings, cooking classes and immersive culinary experiences.

Opening this summer is Corallino in Point Loma, the most ambitious project yet from Chef Cesarina Mezzoni, whose restaurants Cesarina Ristorante and Elvira have already earned Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition. Inspired by the neighbourhood’s rich fishing heritage, Corallino will serve coastal Italian cuisine centred around freshly caught seafood and house-made pasta, cementing San Diego’s reputation as one of California’s most exciting food destinations.

For something a little different, swap the cocktail bar for one of San Diego’s independent breweries.
