“Hydrating well is one of the most important aspects of diet, fasting, and the highly spiritual month of Ramadan,” explains Shehnaz Bashir.
“Adults require 1.5–2 litres of water a day, which is mainly lost through sweat and urine. Our bodies rely on fluid intake to maintain normal functions—especially during fasting. If we don’t hydrate adequately, it can lead to headaches, dizziness, lack of concentration, mood changes, bloating, and constipation.
These symptoms are common during Ramadan, but they’re largely preventable by prioritising hydration.”
Shehnaz Bashir’s Top Hydration Tips for Ramadan
To help those observing Ramadan stay hydrated, Shehnaz shares her expert hydration tips:
1. Know the signs of dehydration – Monitor your urine colour before fasting; aim for a clear colour. Other signs include headaches, irritability, and dry lips.
2. Boost electrolytes when needed – Since electrolytes come from diet, you may need extra electrolytes in your drinks, especially if you’re prone to dehydration. During Iftar and Suhoor, focus on consuming hydration-supporting vitamins and minerals.
3. Limit salt intake – A high-salt diet can lead to increased thirst. Stick to no more than six grams of salt per day, avoid adding extra salt to meals, and opt for herbs and spices instead. Supplementing with electrolytes can help maintain essential mineral levels.
4. Eat hydrating foods – Water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, strawberries, and cucumber, as well as meals like soups and stews, contribute to daily fluid intake.
5. Reduce caffeine consumption – Caffeine causes dehydration by increasing urine output. Switching to decaffeinated tea or coffee can help retain hydration levels.
