Top 5: Best Avocado on Toast in LondonBy Angelica Malin
Yes, I know, it’s niche. But I like niche. Especially when it’s green and creamy and served on seedy toast. Avocado on toast is the big thing in the fashionable foodie community; judging by how often it creeps onto our Instagram feed, I predict that this humble veggie dish will be around for a while on London’s breakfast menus.
Having eaten my way through a probably unhealthy amounts of ‘healthy fats’ this year, I thought it was only right that I share with you my list of the best avocado on toast in London, rated on everything from price point to flavour additions. I like to keep it simple: a dash of balsamic, a good pinch of black pepper and sprinkling of chilli flakes, that’ll do me. However you like it, here’s some variations that will make you green with breakfast envy:
1. Best Avocado on Toast in London: Simple Avocado at Riding House Cafe
Name: Avocado on toast, wholemeal toast, black pepper
Take Note: It’s not the most generous serving in town, but it’s enough to keep you going, pureed into a guacamole-like pate. They fail to mention on the menu that it comes really, really spicy, but I like that – it gives your morning a real kick. The toast is super seedy, served with a wedge of lemon and a tiny pot of balsamic. This seemingly innocuous pot of balsamic is in fact a total.game.changer.
Flavour Wins: Good heat. Good crunchy toast. Just really good.
2. Best Avocado on Toast in London: Spicy Avocado at No. 11 Pimlico Road
Name: Crushed Avocado & Feta
Take Note: I’m starting to notice that avocado on toast is a bit like Afternoon Tea: no-one quite knows how much it’s meant to cost. At No.11 Pimlico Road, a beautiful little all-day dining spot near the Kings Road, they justify the extra £2 with the addition of crumbly feta, chilli oil and coriander. It’s a valiant attempt to make the dish a tad more ‘lunchy’, although I don’t think it needs it – keep it fresh and light, I say.
Flavour Wins: Salty, cheesy and a lot of avocado. Yum.
3. Best Avocado on Toast in London: Posh Avocado at Dean Street Townhouse
Name: Avocado on toast, poached egg
Take Note: You come to Dean Street for vibe as much as food. Surrounded by suited and booted ladies who brunch, you can’t help but feel totally at ease in the swanky oak furnishing and pretty, refined decor. Back to the green stuff, their avocado on toast is nice, if a little strange. They mix it with something spicy and creamy, I think it’s a green chilli-infused pesto, and if I’m being totally picky, it needs to be sliced in 2 to avoid awkward breakfast spillage. Also, the lemon seems a bit lonely. Not my favourite but it’s going to be up there for people points.
Flavour Wins: They do a great beetroot juice too, try it.
4. Best Avocado on Toast in London: Trendy Avocado at Caravan
Name: Avocado, chilli, lemon, olive oil
Take Note: Not only one of the cheapest, but also one of the best in town. At Caravan, Kings Cross’ own hipster hangout, their avocado is served on sourdough, and the garlicky lemon and olive oil makes it a bit of a savoury treat. It’s more of a crush than a puree, so the one to go for is you still like your avocado with a bit of texture.
Flavour Wins: Good portion, good vibes.
5. Best Avocado on Toast in London: Clean & Lean Avocado at The Good Life Eatery
Name: Avocado and chilli
Take Note: The Good Life is the trendy health spot in London and has adoring fashion fans up and down London. We’re big fans of their Matcha Lattes made with extra creamy almond milk, and the Acai Bowl is great too. Back to the avocado, the lovely stuff is served on toasted granary bread, and it’s hardly messed with at all – just a sprinkle of chilli. Truth be told, it’s how we like it best.
Flavour Wins: Simple, perfection.
