About Time You Tried: Khao-Sō-i’s Songkran SpecialsBy Angelica Malin
To mark Songkran, Thai New Year, Khao-Sō-i – the cult-favourite noodle bar from Chiang Mai – is running a set of limited-edition specials from 13th – 19th April. Songkran is traditionally a time of renewal in Thailand (and, famously, of rather a lot of water), and the menu leans into that spirit of fresh starts, luck and shared tables.

At the centre is khanom jeen, a northern Thai staple that feels especially fitting for the occasion. It’s a deceptively simple dish featuring delicate fermented rice noodles served with condiments and two regional curries. The first curry, nam ngiao, is all slow comfort. Pork and tomato broth forms the base, enriched with Chiang Mai chilli paste and served with noodles and seasonal vegetables.
Then there’s gaeng kiew wan, the green curry that most diners will recognise, though not quite like this. Fragrant, vibrant and built on fresh green curry paste, coconut milk and Thai basil, it comes with a choice of chicken or baby aubergine.

The specials sit alongside the restaurant’s regular menu. For a week, Khao-Sō-i offers a focused snapshot of northern Thai cooking during Songkran, with dishes that reflect the festival’s emphasis on sharing, renewal and eating together.
