Although the Cheltenham Festival isn’t set to begin until March 15thnext year, it’s time to start looking at the favourite horses in each event. Sometimes it takes looking at last year’s results and sometimes you will want to look at the trainer’s record. It really is a combination of both so if you are looking to place a winning wager in next year’s festival, it behoves you to follow both horses and trainers.

Start with the Feature Races

When it comes time to bet, you may want to start with the daily feature races throughout each of the four days of the festival. This was the first feature race of the Cheltenham Festival in 2021, held on 16 March. The winning horse was Honeysuckle,and the trainer was Henry de Bromhead. If you are following trainer stats, you will surely see that de Bromhead was the trainer in 3 of the 4 feature races last year. Are you looking for a trainer to use as the foundation of your wagers in 2022? You cannot go wrong with almost any horse trained by this trainer. While Willie Mullins is said to the be the best trainer in the UK, de Bromhead has earned his place in the Who’s Who of Horse Trainers – if there is such a list. 

Stayers’ Hurdle Winning Trainer 2021

Of the four feature races last year at Cheltenham Festival, only the Stayers’ Hurdle had a winning trainer other than de Bromhead. Gavin Cromwell was the trainer of Flooring Porter who came in first in 2021. With a total of 186 wins in three categories of races, you can feel safe to place a wager on any horse this man has trained.

And here we have the final feature race in the Cheltenham Festival to be run at exactly 3:30pm on the final day of the festival. Last year, Minella Indo was also trained by Henry de Bromhead, and this is part of what has put this winning trainer in the list of trainers to watch in 2022. The Gold Cup at Cheltenham Festival is not only the final feature race but also the crowning point of the event. 

Why Trainer Stats Are So Important

As you can see from the four feature races of the Cheltenham Festival of 2021, it becomes obvious why trainers’ stats are so important. Imagine being the trainer of three out of fourwinning horses in the UK’s largest and most popular horse racing event.If you look at the horses entered in the 2022 event, go onto the trainers, and do a search of their stats. While the favourite doesn’t always come in first, most often they will place or show.

In fact, all the information you could ever want and so much more would be available on the BHA site. Remember, the favourite doesn’t always come in, but they do more often than not. Checkout the trainer’s stats before placing your bet and chances are you will find the horses in each event to favour.
