Blusher has been one of those things over the years that is like Marmite – you either love it or you hate it. However, thanks to the increasingly popular social media platform, TikTok, many old trends are making a comeback – everything from 90s fashion, to dance crazes, and even blusher.

TikTok has long since provided us with makeup tips and hacks – both the weird and the wonderful. But what is the “sunburn blush” trend that has taken the world by storm? Let’s look.

What is “sunburn blush”?

Whilst traditional blusher aims to give the appearance of blushing, as you can probably imagine, sunburn blush gives the impression of having caught the sun.

We all love to look tanned and sun kissed – who doesn’t? However, the sun can have a harmful effect on the skin, especially if you let it get as far as sunburn. Therefore, instead, many of us turn to artificial options, such as self-fake tan and bronzer.

In the same vein, sunburn blush utilises blusher to give the appearance of having been sat in the sun just a smidgen too long, making the skin look fresh and glowy as if you have just come back from jet setting abroad.

How to get the look

Firstly, you need to get the right products. You will need bronzer, blusher, highlighter, and a blending brush. Of course, some bronzer bundles include a variety of shades in the same compact, serving a triple purpose.

Start with the bronzer. This should be applied to the places where the sun naturally hits your skin, such as around the hairline on your forehead. It can also be used to carve out your cheekbones, sharpen your jawline, and even subtly contour your nose.

Next, grab your blusher. It is best to opt for a pink blusher, rather than a peach or purple shade. Instead of just applying the blusher to the apples of the cheeks, you want to apply it in a ‘W’ shape across your face.

From the apples of the cheeks, blend up and outwards towards the hairline on both sides. Then create the upside-down inner ‘V’ shape starting on the bridge of the nose, and blending down to meet the apples of your cheeks.

It is the nose blusher that makes this blusher look sunburn-like.

Finally, hit the high points of your cheekbone, brow bone, and cupid’s bow with a highlighter. A subtle pink tone would work beautifully. For the pièce de resistance, apply highlighter to the very tip of your nose in a heart shape, to really give you that sun kissed glow.

What blusher is best?

A powder blusher usually works better for this look, as it is much easier to build up and soften when blending.

If you do decide to use a cream blusher, you may need a larger amount of product than you need to cover all the places you need – which can then lead to your “sunburn” looking a little too realistic! If this happens, just get a little bit of face powder on a fluffy brush to mute the blusher just a tad.

And there you have it – everything you need to know about the “sunburn blush” trend. Love it or hate it, you can’t deny how fresh-faced it makes any complexion.
