We chatted to Ebou about staying motivated during the chillier months, and what people can expect from Physical Excellence:

What inspires you most to stay fit?

There are two things that motivate me to stay fit and that is my family because as I inevitably grow older I’d like to stay healthy and in shape for my family so that I can be healthy and fit enough to enjoy valuable time with them.

Secondly, it’s my clients, not only do I motivate my clients but watching them in action and seeing many of their journeys and achieving their goals gives me the drive to always want to get fitter and be a better personal trainer/coach for them.

What are your thoughts on calorie-controlled diets?

Well, firstly I would say that I’m not a fan of anything that has to do with diets, because diets are usually associated with temporary eating habits. I prefer the term calorie controlled ‘meals’ because for me I like to work with my clients to build the habit of having healthy sustainable meals that they can enjoy forever.

In my experience, not many people can or even have the time to calculate exactly how many calories they are consuming for each meal for a prolonged period of time. That is why I rather use the method of helping clients know what’s on their plate and what should be on their plates.

For example, imagine your plate and split it into 3 sections: 50% protein, 20% fats, 30% carbohydrates. You can easily visualise roughly how much of what you need, it doesn’t have to be extremely accurate as we are going for long term healthy eating habits that can be put in place for you and your family.

What is Muay Thai and how did you get into it?

Muay Thai is a form of standup fighting that consists of punches, kicks, elbows, knees, clinches and throws/sweeps. It’s a great sport for cardio as well as overall conditioning.

I first got into Muay Thai after meeting my coach in a local cafe, he had asked me to come in and try out Muay Thai for recovery of my leg which I had fractured several months prior to meeting him. I decided to go in and try it out and absolutely fell in love with the sport. Not only did it help me recover, but also helped me build a solid mental and physical state of mind.

What is the advantage of training out of a gym?

Training out of a gym offers you freedom of time. You can train at a time of your convenience and at a place of your choice, whether you prefer indoors or outdoors. We provide you with the option to choose, and rather than having to wait for the showers in the gym or being annoyed at the person before you because they spat on the floor or even having to travel home sweaty, you can simply choose to train at home then take a few steps to go to your own shower or to eat in the comfort of your home.

How important is your diet to looking/feeling great?

There’s a saying that no workout can outwork a bad diet! And it’s true, regardless whether your goal is to look great or feel great you must be consuming what works for you. When you are on any health and fitness journey remember that eating healthy will be vital to the way you perform, your body function, your recovery, how you lose weight or gain muscle even the way you sleep and many more.

To answer your question, eating healthy is a key component to looking great and feeling great.

How do you stay motivated in these cold months?

By having goals and targets and sticking to them whether it is cold, raining or snowing.
I set myself goals and also for my clients, and regardless of the weather, the goals need to be reached. Now everyone has a choice and that is to either be disciplined and reach your goals regardless of the weather or make excuses and not achieve the set goals

Do you offer family sessions?

Yes, we offer amazing family sessions whether it’s family personal training sessions, Muay Thai or boxing sessions, and stretch and flexibility sessions which are growing popular with many families as it allows the whole family to stay healthy together. This is great with the adults and kids because the adults want to stay healthy/fit and the kids are motivated by the adults and everyone has fun at the same time.

Do you think there are too many people on Instagram telling you how to keep fit/eat well?

To be honest, I’m not sure whether it is too much or not enough as we have been so busy at Physical Excellence and our business is a little different in the sense that we provide very unique services which are tailored for each client at a time of each client’s convenience. I haven’t been able to keep up with those on Instagram that are posting about keep fit and eat well services.
