Since opening earlier this year, neighbourhood eatery Marcella has gone from strength to strength. Showcasing flavours of the Med, and celebrating superior ingredients by cooking them simply – Marcella has proved a hit with foodies across the capital. We sat down with co-owner Jack Beer to talk opening a second restaurant, fresh pasta, and his favourite brunch spot:

Marcella is the sister restaurant to Astrui in Peckham – why did you decide to open in Deptford?

Deptford is a vibrant area, with lots of recent openings such as Winemakers, Villages Brewery, and the many independent businesses in the new Market Yard by the station. And we thought we would be a good fit for the area.

What can people expect from the food at Marcella?

Simple Italian food; plenty of pasta, all freshly made by us in-house, and dishes moving through the seasons changing with the best of the produce available at the time.

Marcella has absolutely smashed it since opening – how’s the journey been?

It’s great we’ve had such positive feedback, from our customers and the press. We’re really pleased with the comments we’ve had, and it gives us plenty of confidence in our approach to what we do.

What advice would you give to people looking to open their own restaurant?

First and foremost, make sure you have plenty of previous experience in the industry, and in businesses similar to the type you would like to open yourself. Pay close attention to the figures and margins. Be resilient when problems arise, which they inevitably will (we’ve already had several power cuts and a flood at Marcella!).

What’s your favourite part of your job?

Working with a great team of people, and a busy Saturday night’s service.

What do you think of the London foodie scene?

It’s exciting right now, with so many young, independent operators opening in so many locations across the city. There’s no need to get into central London any more to find a good spot to eat.

What place has inspired Marcella’s menu the most?

Nowhere in Italy specifically – we like to draw inspiration from all over.

Describe Marcella in three words:

Seasonal, Simple, Delicious!

Secret to the best pasta dish?

Attention to detail – it’s all about consistency.

Favourite place in London for coffee is:

General Store, Peckham – with a pastry.

Favourite place in London for brunch is:

It has to be Salon in Brixton. A favourite of mine.
