10 years ago, as Timehop likes to remind us, we thought we were ahead of the curve posting our every move on Facebook ‘look everyone, look how much fun I’m having’ sang the subliminal messaging. Times have moved on, we are still posting certainly, but these are now moments of higher gravitas, of better quality, using filters, time lapse and carefully constructed memes. We’re bombarded by holidays, home furnishings, wedding ideas, walking, running, gymming, pets and of course, food. Creating delicious food has rarely been off trend, but publishing pictures of it on social platforms is a new vein in which to exploit our efforts. 10 years ago this might as well have been a piece on the best cookery books for 2005, but as we increasingly look to social media for the satisfaction and inspiration in our lives we can now give you, the best Food Apps for 2015, so get cooking and snap away.

1. The Exotic One

Top 5 Food Apps (1)

What: Sri Lankan Recipes for the Lazy

Why: It’s always difficult to predict food trends but experts would have us believe we’ll be leaning heavily towards the East and Africa for our inspiration this year. Not too far away is the relatively unexplored cuisine of Sri Lanka, largely curry based with surprising fresh notes it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. This app is a good place to start for adding impressive dishes to your repertoire.

 2. The Caveman One

Top 5 Food Apps (2)

What: Paleo Snacks – Michael York

Why: You’ve heard of the Paleo diet? Perhaps not as popular as originally predicted the diet of ‘eating like a caveman’ has remained routine only for the hard-core but there’s no reason why Paleo snacks shouldn’t feature regularly in our lives, the principles of the diet remain sound and snacks are so much more interesting than whole plates of raw food.

3. The Dining Out One

Top 5 Food Apps (3)

What: Velocity

Why: The world of food is very much open to innovation and the restaurant trade is no exception. The new Velocity app aims to change the way we dine out by enabling pre ordering, reserving and paying for our food through the magic of smart phones. Although by no means advocating the abolition of the handsome attentive waiter this does seem like something that might catch on, we can always move to leering at baristas and bar tenders instead….

4. The Veggie One

Top 5 Food Apps (4)

What: Riverford Veg recipes

Why: A sign of the times and undoubtedly one of the first world problems to rock our nation is what to do with one’s Veg Box. Organic veg on the doorstep is nothing new, in fact it’s so charmingly traditional that it’s become novel again. What plagues the likes of Guy Watson and other growers in their sleep is how to keep the variety in without scaring off less confident cooks. This app addresses just that issue with the unique ‘veg machine’, you can list the lingering vegetables at the bottom of the fridge and it spits out a recipe.

Don’t worry about it being too daunting or boring and let the sunshine of Ella Woodward fill your life with Sweet Potato brownies and Baobab energy balls. Her You Tube videos are a helpful addition, although the place to start is with the app and dose of California cool you won’t be able to resist.
