When Sunday rolls around it only means one thing: roast. Forget your pies, your beef Wellington and your fish and chips – the Sunday roast is by far the best British dish by a country mile. Crispy roasties, buckets of gravy, pillow-like Yorkshire puddings; The Sunday roast is the king of the British dining scene. The roast game in London has had a rivival in recent times, and you’re never too far from a decent plateful of the good stuff. When The Draft House Camden opened up shop (conveniently located round the corner from our office), we knew we had to pay these guys a visit. Here’s what you need to know:

The Draft House: The Lowdown

The Draft House have 13 locations across London, and their recent opening in Camden follows the same fail-safe formula; decent grub, plenty of beers and a laid-back vibe. They take their beer selection seriously, and stock weird and wonderful brews from small producers and those from across the pond. The Draft House only opened a few months ago, but it’s already proved popular with thirsty Camdenites.

The Draft House: The Food

If there’s a Scotch egg on the menu, we’re going to order it. The Scotch egg was served with no silly side garnish, just a pot of curry mayonnaise, and you know what’s – that’s all it needed. The scotch egg was lightly cased in a crispy sausage shell and the eggs’ yolk was runny. And the curry mayonnaise was a condiment revelation.

If you’re visiting with another roast enthusiast, there’s only one dish you need to order: the whole farm. The plate, which was presented like your mum bringing the Christmas turkey to the dining table, featured three types of meat (pork belly, chicken leg, and rib horn of beef). These were meaty chicken legs, not some pithy cut where supermarkets would be selling 4 for under two quid. The beef was the real star of the show – cooked so the meat was still slightly pink, it was rich and flavoursome.

Yorkshire puddings were the size of the house, and the roasties were wonderfully crispy. No complaints here. And our gravy addiction was met with open arms. There was no judgement when we rinsed a third jug of this sweet nectar. The only thing we would say is that the meat to veg ratio was slightly off. If you’ve got three types of meat on your plate, you need your 5 a day, a few carrots and some token runner beans aren’t going to cut it. Some broccoli, honeyed parnisps and some cabbage would have made this dish a certified banger.

Sticky toffee pudding? Now you’re talking. What we envisaged was a mound of toffee pudding swimming in a caramel sauce – which wasn’t quite the case. The pudding was served as a slice (controversial), and was finished with sauce and a blob of ice cream. Presentation aside, the pudding still boasted all the STP qualities; moist, sweet and damn delicious.

The Draft House: The Verdict

If you’re looking for a roast that won’t break to bank, and is both tasty and filling – you’ve come to the right place. The Draft House aren’t trying to invent the wheel with their food offering, and that’s why it works. No fuss, no frill, just honest British munch.
