What do we love? Brunch spots where you can add on loads of extras, munch on warm, homemade banana bread and have your cappuccino with oat milk and no one will judge you. If you love all those things too, then head down to The Bach near Hoxton Overground, where your every foible, every strange dietary request, will be celebrated like a child’s first steps.

The Bach made waves on the London brunch scene when they opened their first gaff on Broadway Market. They’ve just expanded, with their new site a mere stone’s throw from bustling Kingsland Road. Looking to hit up somewhere new this weekend? We fell in love with The Bach when we visited, and we’re pretty confident you will too. Here’s what you need to know:

The Bach Hoxton: What

You might have noticed; day by day, coffee by coffee, Kiwi-inspired brunch spots are popping up all over the city, as London finally takes the hint from its cousins down under. This trend isn’t for everyone; some want to hold onto our Britishness as much as possible, whilst others are happy to let it sail away in a sea of Kiwi-inspired brunches, flat whites and chalkboard menus. And no where is this more true than at The Bach in Hoxton.

The Bach is an Kiwi cafe celebrating seasonal cooking, fresh, organic produce – with the team championing dishes that are suitable for people with dietary restrictions. If you’re a dairy-free queen or a plant-powered princess, there’s plenty of eats that can be adapted – meaning no one is left with some bowl of disappointment.

The Bach has that East London vibe oozing out of its caffeinated veins – there’s industrial features, moody low lighting and yes, the tables are slightly too close together. But we love this closeness; the fact you can spy on people’s food without being remotely ashamed is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

The Bach Hoxton: Food

People talk the talk when it comes to coffee, but The Bach really delivers when it comes to their coffee creations. They used beans from Allpress and the menu is a treasure trove of dairy-free milks. Naturally, we ordered an oat milk cappucino, like the millennials that we really are. It delivered. Big time.

Sweetcorn fritters seem to be spreading onto London’s menus like some kind of breakfast rash. A dish that can often be laced with oils and over fried corn, The Bach’s fritters were anything but. The sweetcorn fritters were piled high with glazed bacon which was both succulent, sticky, and the meat had a lovely sweet flavour. The dollop of tangy tomato chilli jam, and garlic aioli really lifted the dish to new brunch heights. It was rich, flavoursome and extremely satisfying. If you opt for the fritters, sling on a side of halloumi – the grilled cheese really set the whole dish off.

Things that make us happy: a decent veggie fry up.  A veggie fry up needs to have qualities of its own, not just a sad replacement of the meat extravaganza, with some token wilted spinach and a limp hash brown. Oh no, it needs to have sass. The Bach fry up is one of the most exciting versions of a veggie Full English we’ve tried in the capital. The produce is all super fresh and full of flavour, and the sweet potato and mushrooms gave the whole dish a zing that a normal fry-up lacks. There’s slabs of halloumi and runny yolks. It’s brunch perfection. The beans had a slightly sweet tinge that left us kind of puzzled. Did the beans benefit from the added sweet cinnamon hit? No. Did we enjoy it? Sure.

The Bach Hoxton: The Verdict

The Bach ticks all the boxes when it comes to brunch; killer coffee, a mega selection of cakes and pastries, and a great variety of eats. It won’t be long until we return again – we’ve already got our hearts set on their brioche French toast. Prepare for a wait at the weekends, the secret it out about The Bach.
