The CoffeeWorks Project are a family-owned enterprise based in Angel, but they’re growing – they now have coffee shops in Leadenhall and Blackfriars Road, too. They pride themselves on supporting independent, artisan food and coffee producers.

The Vibe:

The Angel branch of CoffeeWorks is always packed, and you’ll usually recognise a few faces who regularly come here to get things ticked off their to-do list. It’s the perfect café for a date with your laptop, a pile of assignments and a serious caffeine hit. There are long tables with benches, readily available plug sockets, and they’ve even blessed us with that rarest of café features – free, fast WiFi. Have we died and gone to heaven?

It’s not all about work here, though – it’s also a friendly spot to come for a bit of down-time, provided you can nab a quiet table. It’s got a lovely modern vibe, with bright and airy décor, and there’s a gorgeous garden outside that’s perfect for chilling with mates on a sunny day. If you’ve come to relax by yourself, grab a magazine from their stacks of fresh glossies.

The Coffee:

aaaaa

As their name might suggest, The CoffeeWorks Project are really, really into coffee. So much so that they’ve invested in the Slayer coffee machine – the only espresso machine of its kind in London. This is a manual machine that relies solely on a paddle, a lever and the skill of the barista. Their Slayer menu showcases the espresso coffees made using this method.

They’ve also got an extensive filter brew menu, including varieties made with milk chocolate and rose water. If you’re after something with a little kick, try their chilli mocha (£3).

The Food:

CoffeeWorks have lots of breakfast and lunch options (try the courgette and broccoli salad, £4.40) but their main foodie attraction is their vast range of unique cakes. They serve flour-free chocolate and almond cake, orange and pistachio muffins and delicious banana bread, to name but a few.

For a really indulgent perk-me-up, grab a brownie (£2.50). The brownie flavours on offer change regularly, covering everything from Nutella to pistachio and white chocolate. Expect all you could want from a brownie – they’re rich, gooey and the perfect size to devour with a coffee.
