Decorating your home can be exciting but also overwhelming. This is especially true if you have been renting for years and can finally decorate your own home, but don’t know where to start. Once you have the basics painted and organized, it’s time to start with the decor.

You will eventually find that you will never stop decorating and improving your home, but it can be tricky to know where to start. To help you out, here are some modern and unique decor ideas for your home.

1. Embrace the Ornamental

When you first start decorating, it can be difficult to look beyond the practical and essential. But, once you have all of these sorted, you can start looking for things that are purely decorative. Whether your style is minimalist or maximalist, you can find items that are placed around your home purely for their beauty.

Try looking at Instagram and Pinterest for ideas, but don’t rely on someone else’s style or what’s fashionable. Pampas grass is beautiful and in style but if it doesn’t suit you then you can try something completely different. This can still be around dried flowers or other items but doesn’t have to be what everyone else has.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of Bold Colors

It is very fashionable at the moment to have dark blue walls with dark green couches or white walls with bright orange and yellow splodges. These styles are very intense but don’t be too overwhelmed by them.

Remember that, now you have your own home, you can try something different, hate it, and paint over it and start all over again.

3. Artwork Isn’t Everything

Putting up artwork is a great way to decorate your home but it isn’t the only way. Some people feel as though only interesting prints can go up on the wall but there are a lot of different options available.

You can add a mirror, a guitar, your bike, or an interesting clock to your hallway wall. Try different things out and see what works in terms of space and aesthetics. Sometimes the item you always thought was perfect doesn’t work in reality.

Try to branch out and see what suits your style. This could be a large ornate mirror or a stylish rolex wall clock. A good way to visualize your home is to lay out your ideas on Photoshop or another kind of software. It doesn’t need to look especially good, but it can help you get a sense of space and what colors work well together.

4. Style a Fireplace

Just like clothing, interior design styles come and go. This means that there is a current trend of opening up fireplaces and styling them. This is the complete opposite of generations before who boarded up and got rid of fireplaces.

Fireplaces can be the centerpiece of a room and really draw everything together. A well-styled fireplace can completely make a room when nothing else is styled. Fireplaces can also look very different, they don’t all have to be of a traditional style.

Some fireplaces are now just openings in a chimney breast whereas others can be large ornate hearths. With a fireplace, it’s much harder to start over again, so it’s best to plan out what you want before you start ripping anything apart.

5. Decorate the Odd Spaces

A great way to add something different to your home is to decorate different spaces. This can mean creating a gallery wall in the bathroom, adding a corner bookcase to your kitchen, putting wallpaper on the ceiling, or making your own wall paneling

These are different ways to be modern and chic without just blindly following trends. There’s nothing wrong with finding inspiration from modern trends on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, but it’s important to find your own style.

It can be difficult to find your own personal style, especially if you have never decorated a home before. Try to find inspiration from the things you already own. Look through your wardrobe and look at your clothes. This will give you an idea of the types of colors, patterns, and styles that you enjoy.

Try out different things that pop into your mind and then scrap them and start again if you don’t like them. You might not always have the budget or time for this but if you enjoy interior design and want to make your home perfect, try out the different styles you think you might enjoy on a whim.
