This our 2014 guide, for our 2017 guide, see here. In the spirit of Chanukah and being able to hide everything under a Christmas jumper, we thought it was only right to balance out all our Christmas cocktail guides to some of oily, doughnut goodness. We tried them all; the good, the bad, the messy, to find London’s best sweet bites. Without further adieu, here’s our favourite doughnuts in London – eight to match the eight days of Chanukah, of course.

Happy festive season one and all!

1. Best Classic Dougnut: Vanilla Custard, Bread Ahead

What: Bread Ahead is a market stall in Borough Market, London – they sell fantastic baked items, like wholemeal sourdough, London bloomer and Justin Gellatly’s famed doughnuts. The man makes doughnuts so good his cook book Bread, Cake, Doughnut, Pudding has been a smash success.

The Doughnut: Classic vanilla custard. Simple pleasures.

Where: Borough Market every Saturday – here

2. Best Savoury Doughnut: Spicy Ox Cheek, Duck and Waffle

What: Spicy ox cheek doughnut (£10) with apricot jam and smoked paprika sugar may not be your usual doughnut, but trust us on this. It’s a savoury doughnut served with sweet paprika sugar outside and a lovely fruity dipping sauce – the perfect mix of sweet and savoury, surpassed only by the incredible setting at the top of the Heron Tower.

Why: More reasons to list, but we’ll start with the incredible ‘Elvis’ waffles with peanut butter, banana and chocolate.

Where: Heron Tower 110 Bishopgate, EC2N

3. Best Oriental Doughnuts: Kinako Donuts, Flesh and Buns

What: The Kinako donuts with black sugar custard at Flesh and Buns are heavenly; they are served in threes, and the dough is made with roasted soya bean flour, which is nutty and delicious. The donuts are quite filling – don’t have too many buns if you want to try them! We’re not quite sure what black sugar really is, but we think it’s good news.

Why: Come for the express menu after 10pm – it’s much cheaper than the regular menu and a total bargain at £10.

Where: Flesh & Buns, 41 Earlham St, London WC2H 9LX

4. Best Cronuts: Dum Dum Doughnuts

What: Dum Dum Doughnuts was founded by Paul Hurley to create “The Best Doughnut in the World” – and they’re not far off. The difference is these doughnuts are baked, not fried – which lowers fat and gives the doughnuts an ‘oven fresh’ burst, by being light and fluffy, rather than stodgy. They come in amazing array of flavours – and can be found in Boxpark every day.

The Doughnut: The Zebra – layers of Croissant dough and chocolate croissant dough, filled with chocolate butter crème and decorated with dark chocolate or The Croconut – coconut-infused butter crème decorated in dark chocolate and real coconut sprinkles.

Where: Unit 31, Box Park, 2-4 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, London, E1 6GY

What: You Doughnut! are Betsy & Jo, creative doughnut makers, selling handmade bite-size doughnuts covered or filled with delicious sauces and tasty toppings. You can find them at KERB in Kings Cross and Maida Vale – the popularity of the stall allowed them to quit their full-time jobs in 2012 and commit to doughnuts!

Why: Fluffy bitesized doughnuts rolled in flavoured sugar, filled with sauce and topped with a variety of nuts and sprinkles. Heaven.

Where: Granary Square, London N1C

6. Best Mediterranean Doughnut: Loukoumades, Mazi

What: Loukoumades with lavender honey and chocolate sorbet (£7) are heaven on a plate. The traditional Greek doughnuts are deep-fried pastry balls, soaked in sugar syrup normally. In Greece, they are often spiked with cinnamon and Greek Jews make zvingoi as Hanukkah treats. Delicious!

Why: Chocolate, honey and pastry all at once. Too, too much goodness.

Where: 12-14 Hillgate Street, London, W8 7SR

7. Best Wacky Doughnut: Sea Salt Caramel + Banana, Crosstown Doughnuts

What: Crosstown’s concept is simple – the best ingredients, sourced locally where possible. They search across the globe for the highest quality produce and make the doughnuts from scratch fresh daily. The flavours are unusual and fantastic (think peanut butter and berry) and their doughnut dough is of the sourdough family, which gives it a slight chew.

Why: A winning combination of homemade chocolate soil topping, chocolate sour dough base and fresh banana cream filling. A sweet but silky banana cream filling is encased in Crosstown’s light and fluffy chocolate sour dough – top it all off with a generous swirl of sea salt caramel and a divine chocolate soil.

Why: For the unusual flavours, such as kiwi and white chocolate, and blueberry pie. A pie flavoured doughnut? Yes, we can get on board with that.
