About Time You Tried: Best UK Hotels for VegetariansBy Angelica Malin
Let’s face it, when it comes to the breakfast part of B&B, vegetarians tend to get a pretty raw deal. With National Vegetarian Week shining a spotlight on meat-free menus – and the sustainability and health benefits that come with them – LateRooms.com has found six of the UK’s tastiest vegetarian-friendly hotels and guesthouses, where even the staunchest of omnivores will be happy:
1. Stonecroft Country Guesthouse, Peak District 4*
What: Set in the heart of the stunning Peak District, plant power at Stonecroft goes way past the front garden. You’ll find individually designed rooms with handmade soaps, shower gels and shampoos in this 1900s country house.
Why: Host, Julia, is an award winning chef – and just happens to be a lactose intolerant, vegetarian coeliac. That means the emphasis at breakfast is very much on a wide range of surprising, organic vegetarian and vegan-friendly dishes. Oh, and everything’s gluten free too (including the handmade chocolates you’ll find in your room).
Where: Edale, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 7ZA
Prices: Doubles from £99 per night
What: On a quiet street close to Hyde Park, La Suite West is all strong, clean lines and sculptural touches. It’s a focus that plays out in its vegetarian restaurant, RAW, too: a contemporary space dedicated to modern, healthy options (and all meat free, naturally).
Why: When it comes to breakfast, whilst a (health conscious) meat option is available, the focus is on lighter vegetarian and vegan choices, including scrambled tofu, vegan sausage and a host of freshly squeezed juices and smoothies to power you up for the day.
Where: 41-51 Inverness Terrace, London, W2 3JN
Prices: Doubles from £135 per night
3. Cheltenham Lawn & Pittville Gallery, Cheltenham 4*
What: A historic regency townhouse close to the centre of Cheltenham, with gorgeous furnishings and crisp Egyptian cotton linen.
Why: Mornings here will bring you award winning breakfasts based around 100% vegetarian, local, organic produce. Try Gloucestershire natural yoghurt with homemade fruit syrup and honey from the Cotswold area. You’ll also find local art in the onsite Pittville Gallery and a range of creative workshops – from still life to sewing – on offer in the hotel’s drawing room.
Where: 5 Pittville Lawn, Cheltenham, GL52 2BE
Prices: Doubles from £85, singles from £55
4. St Johns Lodge, Windermere 4*
What: Nestled right between Windermere village, Bowness village and the lake itself, you’ll find a homely welcome and cosy, stylish rooms at St John’s Lodge.
Why: Winner of a coveted Visit England Breakfast Award, you’ll also find some pretty tempting options on offer, including a daily choice of more than 15 vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as plenty of gluten and dairy free choices too.
Where: Lake Road, Windermere, LA23 2EQ
Prices: Doubles from £72
5. Fairfield House Vegetarian Guest House, Taunton 4*
What: All exposed beams, timber floors and stone fireplaces, at just a mile from the Somerset coast and close to Exmoor National Park too, Fairfield House is something of a country dream. Being completely vegetarian, it’s also a meat-free haven and 100% organic too.
Why? Owners Shruti and David set out to create a vegetarian guest house and are dedicated to creating healthy vegetarian meals – from breakfast and beyond. For added zen, take part in one of the range of retreats on offer, designed specifically to help you recharge and rejuvenate.
Where: 51 Long Street, Williton, Taunton, TA4 4QY
Prices: Doubles from £75 per night
One for luck…
6. Copperfields Vegetarian Guesthouse, Broadstairs 4*
What: Moments from the sandy beaches and clifftops of the Kent coast – and just 1hr 20 minutes from London’s St Pancras – Copperfields Vegetarian Guesthouse focuses not only on providing vegetarian meals, but also looks to use local and ethically sourced products wherever possible throughout the B&B
Why: You’ll find vegan options available on the menu too, and a focus on healthy, freshly prepared food. If you’re in need of a fry up, fear not – you’ll still find a (veggie-friendly) full English, alongside freshly prepared fruit smoothies and juices.
