London’s Best: Hidden Beauty ShopsBy Kirstie Pickering
London is brimming with beauty shops. High-streets are jammed with cosmetics stores and the internet is flooded with various online shopping sites. If you need to find that lipstick you bought from Rome back in 2003, we’re pretty sure one of these hidden beauty shops will stock it. Purses at the ready:
Why: Heaven on earth for any foreign pharmacy fiend, BeautyMART spread its wings from its Knightsbridge home at the other side of the city to it’s second home at Topshop’s flagship store on Oxford Circus. Highlights include DHC’s cult Japanese skincare, the forever-hunted Bioderma and French favourite brand Embryolisse.
You can also stop by for personal consultations and beauty styling and when you know BeautyMART is run by Millie Kendall, one half of Ruby&Millie cosmetics, and ex-British Vogue Beauty Director Anna-Marie Solowij, why wouldn’t you?
Where: Topshop, Oxford Street, London, W1D 1LA
Why: Advertised as a health and gift shop, Zest offers a host of cosmetic treats for London lovers. It’s filled to the brim with brands you usually have to separately scout around for, all under one welcoming roof. Stop by to pick up ones of the Antipodes renown face masks, get your hit of Phyto haircare or perhaps the internet-famous Caudalie Grape Water.
Why: The professional makeup supplier is a beauty insiders secret. The two-floor store offers hard-to-find popular overseas brands such as Makeup Forever, Japonesque and Viseart, meaning you don’t need to fork out on pricey shipping fees to get your beauty hit. They stock every beauty accessory, from mirrors, to professional makeup brushes and tools.
Where: 12 Kensington Church Street, W8 4EP
Why: Hidden among the kind of stores you visit to buy DIY tools, Pearl Pharmacy is a European dream on home soil. Living up to its namesake, this treasure stocks coveted brands aplenty with Nuxe, Vichy and Bioderma making up just some of its offerings. Don’t be fooled by its plain exterior; it’s what’s inside (the oyster) that counts.
Where: 31 Clapham High Street, SW4 7TR
Why: Just off the beaten track that is Oxford Street, John Bell & Croyden is a one-of-a-kind joy that you can lose hours perusing. Open since 1908, the pharmacy has marked its reputation as a little known haven for beauty and skincare supplies. Zelens, Darphin and This Works are just some of the plethora of brands stocked here alongside fragrances, electrical skin devices and nail care.
