Looking for a brunch spot in East London? We’ve got just the feature. We’ve spent the past couple of weekends discovering the best coffee and poached eggs in the E5 area. You’re all in for a ruddy treat – top up your oyster, and get planning:

1. For a Classic Brunch: 119 Lower Clapton

What: Local Claptonites (is that a word? we’ve made it a word) flock to 119 Lower Clapton for their coffee, and we don’t blame them. The team use Workshop coffee beans, and take time over every cup. Relaxed vibes, homely feels and a concise all-day menu keeps people coming back time and time again.

Eat and Drink: One thing you need to know about 119 Lower Clapton: food here is always served to a great standard, but don’t expect the quickest service.  For something simple we rave about the avocado and herb salad on toast, and we throw on a few poached eggs – what can we say, we’re creatures of habit. If you’re a sweet fiend, try the granola with fruit compote and yogurt, it’s nutty without being overly sugary, or the banana on toast with almonds, creme fraiche, mint and cinnamon. It’s super tasty. If you go to 119 Lower Clapton and don’t order a coffee, you’re doing it all wrong.

2. For a Super Cute Brunch: Cafe Miami

What: Cafe Miami makes our eyes bleed with happiness – this place is just too darn pretty, and provides plenty of Instagrammable photos. But a place shouldn’t sell itself on decor alone, and we’re never one to be won over by a Valencia filter. Brunch at Cafe Miami is really good, and if you haven’t ventured there – make sure it’s on your list.

Eat and Drink: Try the Nutella filled pancakes with banana for a proper nostalgic kick, or the homemade strawberry pop tart to continue the big kid theme. Plenty of dishes can be made vegan including the almond milk porridge with banana; avocado on toast with chilli jam; and granola with coconut yogurt. The sweetcorn waffle burger with chorizo, avocado, fried egg and hot sauce is fantastic, as is the posh bacon butty. You know what – it all tastes great.

3. For a No Frills Brunch: Mosaic Cafe

What: Blink and you’ll miss Mosaic cafe, an unassuming little joint on the main road in Upper Clapton. It’s feels like a British cafe with a slight tinge of East London – expose brick, walls festooned with random objects and lots of reclaimed wood. The coffee here is glorious, and you’re always guaranteed service with a smile.

Eat and Drink: You can practically have anything on toast – we’re talking about grilled mushrooms and vine tomatoes, eggs, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, and avocado. The list is endless. If you want a global inspired breakfast, order the Mediterranean breakfast with halloumi, feta, egg, fresh tomatoes, cucumber, olives and homemade bread. If you want to eat dessert for breakfast, and lets be honest, who doesn’t – opt for the French toast with honey and whipped cream, topped with strawberries and blueberries. Plenty of veggie options including the veggie breakfast, eggs Florentine and build your own omelette.

4. For a Traditional Brunch: Clapton Table

What: Clapton Table is everything all under one roof – a restaurant, bar, cafe – it’s got it all going on (a bit like a fish and chip shop which sells kebabs and fried chicken). We’ve been for both brunch and dinner, but we can say the brunch menu is by far the better option.

Eat and Drink: Fuel up on some meat-free loving with the Table breakfast – grilled halloumi, roasted peppers, grilled field mushroom, fresh tomato, sautéed spinach, and sourdough bread topped with poached egg. If you’re in need of something heartier, go for the full English – a hangover busting combination of smoked bacon, Cumberland sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, grilled tomato and toasted ciabatta. The American stack will keep you full for hours – freshly cooked 3 slice pancakes layered with bacon, sausage, fried egg, served with Canadian maple syrup and salad. Does it need the salad? No. Does it taste good? Yes.

5. For a Sunday Lunch: The Crooked Billet

What: Not really a brunch, but we’re never one to turn down a Sunday lunch, especially The Crooked Billet’s meaty number. Come to summer months, their beer garden is packed with pasty Londoners lording the sweet summer rays, and tucking into pies, burgers and pints of chilled cider.

Eat and Drink: On Sunday, pop in for their epic roasts. There’s roast sirloin with Yorkshire pudding; roast pork belly with apple sauce; braised lamb shoulder and mint gravy; sea trout with crushed potatoes and blood orange hollandaise; and the veggie-friendly nut roast with spinach and nutmeg puree, and wild mushrooms. And no roast even finishes on a savoury note – choose either the chocolate mousse with blood orange and hazelnuts or the panna cotta with rhubarb, crumble and lovage
