1. Best for Quality: La Gelataria

What: Young, modern passionate gelato lovers, inspired by bringing a modern Slow Food twist to family heritage of artisan gelato-making, La Gelataria is the one. They hand-make everything fresh daily using the best seasonal ingredients – they have more than 90 favours of gelato and sorbets, which are all 100% natural, egg and gluten free and made fresh on order. The sorbet’s are award-winning – try the almond sorbet, with a unique subtle marzipan taste, it’s got a lovely light & dairy-free almond flavour. Or the peach and Prosecco sorbet. Just because.

2. Best for Quirky Flavours: Gelupo

What: Opened in 2010, Gelupo has been praised for selling some of the best gelato in the city. Chef Jacob Kenedy, the brains behind the popular ice cream parlour Bocca Di Lupo, lends his expertise to Gelupo. Jacob tries and tests all of the gelato and creates off the wall flavours including ricotta, chocolate and black pepper and vanilla and saffron. Compared to your classic ice-cream, gelato is heavier and Jacob achieves this by keeping the fat content low, using the best churning equipment to slowly mix the gelato until it freezes. The dairy-free selection offered contains no milk and cream and has fewer calories than your normal gelato – total win.

Order: All the quirky flavours including cinnamon, cherry and expresso. The shop is open until midnight on weekend, if you need a late night sweet fix.

3. Best for Guilt-Free: Snowflake Gelato

What: These ice cream parlours are dreamy. With over 50 gelato and sorbetto flavours such as praline, white chocolate, pistachio, hazelnut, extra dark chocolate sorbetto, come here for variety. For dairy-free honeys, they have Snowflake Guilt Free range – hand-made in-store with natural ingredients, these creations are dairy, gluten and sugar free with no added sugar. They’re not taste-free though, we’ll tell you that for free. The Guilt-Free range includes creamy pear, delicious peach and incredible apple and elderflower ice-cream.

4. Best for Healthy Ice Cream: inSpiral Cafe

What: inSpiral Lounge is a award-winning eco-café, organic bar and events venue, and makes inSpiral Visionary products. Just by Camden Lock waterside, it’s the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday morning with friends. They’ve got a fantastic range of food, from vegan nut roasts to homemade raw granola. They also do homemade dairy-free ice cream made with raw cashews with all raw ingredients, and lots of unusual superfoods like Lucuma thrown in for good measure. The ice cream is 100% natural, raw and vegan – it’s also low GI as sweetened with organic agave nectar, and can be eaten in a gluten-free cone. Healthy ice cream with a superfood kick? Go on, then.

5. Best for Everyone: Gelateria Danieli

What: Opening their first shop in 2005, Gelateria Danieli is a family-run business, with four branch dotted across London.  Bridget Hunt, one of the founders of the ice-cream parlour is a nutritionist and health expert, who uses her knowledge to create healthy ice-creams that are either dairy-free, nut-free, gluten-free or high protein and insists that no one should miss out on an ice cream.  You have the choice of a cup or a gluten-free cone, win win.

Order: The fig sorbet. If you’re feeling hungry add in an extra  scoop of the Chocolate & Cardamon, delicious.
